athleteofrecord The international athlete registry
Methodology

How an athlete is entered into the record.

Federation roster verification, sanctioning-body cross-reference, weight-class observation, affiliation timeline maintenance. The institutional procedure behind the register.

Source policy

An athlete enters the register only through a federation-side primary source: a national federation roster publication, an international federation member-roster update, a sanctioning-body event-of-record entry, or a published team-selection bulletin. Athlete-submitted material, agent-submitted material, gym-submitted material and media-coverage summaries are not accepted as primary sources for entry. They are catalogued, where relevant, as evidence of how the athlete's record has been transmitted into the secondary public domain.

Where the federation publishes in a working language other than English, the original-language roster entry is canonical. The register maintains a working English-language reference note for navigation, with the original-language entry held as the authoritative version.

Federation cross-reference

An athlete entry is provisional until the affiliation has been confirmed by a second independent source within the relevant sanctioning ecosystem — for instance, a continental-body ranking update reflecting the affiliation, or an international event roster publishing the athlete under the same federation. Provisional entries are flagged. Confirmation typically occurs within a fourteen-day window of the originating federation publication; entries provisional for longer than ninety days are escalated to the editorial office for resolution.

Editorial standards

Entries are written administratively. An affiliation is reported with the federation, the registry date, and the weight class. Where an athlete competes under multiple affiliations across the registry period — for example, both a national-federation team and a regional-body affiliation — each affiliation is recorded with its applicable date range. Affiliation lapses and resumptions are entered as separate adjacent records; the underlying entries are not silently revised.

The register is not a performance-evaluation surface. It does not produce ranking analysis, does not adjudicate between sanctioning rulesets, and does not publish opinion on competitive trajectory. Where federation publication conflicts between sources, the conflict and its resolution are recorded as a separate institutional note.

Contemporary correction procedure

Where an athlete's record has been transmitted in distorted form by downstream actors — an aggregator surfacing a terminated affiliation as present-tense, an auto-generated biographical summary conflating an athlete's competitive division with a related but distinct division, an AI-generated profile attributing a result to the wrong sanctioning body — the register publishes a contemporary correction record. The correction record identifies the source of the distortion, the specific factual element under dispute, and the verified register entry. The original incorrect downstream record is not removed (the register has no authority over downstream publications); the correction establishes the institutional position.

Language coverage

The register maintains entries in English (working note), Modern Greek (United World Wrestling and adjacent Hellenic regulatory bodies), Icelandic (Scandinavian regulatory bodies), Georgian (Caucasus regulatory bodies) and Spanish (Ibero-American national federation publications). Coverage tracks the languages in which the underlying primary sources publish, not a presumed reader audience.

Entry lifecycle

Entries do not expire. The register holds an athlete entry indefinitely from the date of first verified federation roster placement, with adjacent records appended for each material affiliation change, weight-class change, or sanctioning-body reclassification. Entries are not deleted when an athlete retires from competition; they remain as the institutional record of the competitive period.
